The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is lobbying the Government to
introduce tougher penalties for businesses that use unlicensed software.
The trade body, which represents most leading software publishers,
believes the current system is too lax because of the fact that abusers
cannot be punished in the civil courts. It wants the Government to
introduce a punitive damages fine that can be levied against firms found
to be using software without the appropriate licence.

People working in small firms are less likely to have an accident
at work than those working for large companies, according to research by
insurance company AXA. It found that just 17% of small business
employees had suffered an accident or injury at work, compared with 47%
of people working for businesses with 250 employees or more. Trips,
slips and falls remained the most common causes of accidents at work,
while people aged over 50 were most likely to fall while at work.

Businesspeople are now so attached to their BlackBerry that they
even take it on holiday. Research shows executives cannot leave the
office behind when they take a break, with more than two-thirds taking a
gadget such as a BlackBerry, palmtop or laptop computer with them.
Nearly seven out of ten of the BlackBerry users told the study that they
checked their work emails at least once a day while they were away.

Small businesses using postage meters are being urged to reset
them to gain a discount on business post following the introduction of
the new size-based postal pricing system brought in by Royal Mail on 21
August. Under the new Pricing in Proportion structure, the price of 1st
class post for meter users has been reduced from 31p to 30p. To take
advantage of the penny discount, customers must reset their machines.
This is particularly important for smaller firms using manual franking
machines. The reduction recognises that business post costs less to
handle and is on top of the 1p discount given to business mail as part
of tariff changes in April 2005.
